Graphite Manufacturing Capabilities for Fluid Sealing

EGC’s graphite manufacturing capabilities are built around the performance requirements engineers care about most: material integrity, density control, dimensional accuracy, and repeatable sealing performance in demanding environments.

From reinforced laminates to molded graphite rings and precision-cut components, our manufacturing methods are designed to convert flexible graphite into functional sealing solutions for harsh thermal and mechanical conditions.

Lamination

We use lamination to increase the strength, durability, and sealing performance of flexible graphite by bonding it to similar laminates or to materials such as foils, polymers, and elastomers.

Our lamination process also includes selecting the right adhesive system for the application, including pressure-sensitive options and adhesives that carbonize after curing for high-temperature environments.

This capability is especially valuable when an application requires:

  • Improved handling strength
  • Reinforcement for pressure loading
  • Enhanced durability
  • A composite structure tailored to specific sealing requirements

Our lamination capabilities support a wide range of products, including gaskets, seal rings, heating elements, continuous on-the-roll laminated materials for high-volume applications, and Thermacord graphite yarn for braided packing.

Compression & Die Molding

When your application requires a shaped graphite component with controlled density, clean geometry, and reliable sealing performance, we use compression and die molding to produce parts that meet those demands.

Our process begins with a precise amount of Thermafoil® ribbon wrapped around a mandrel, then compressed and formed in a die without heat or adhesives. This allows us to manufacture resilient, high-purity, density-controlled graphite seals, rings, and gaskets.

For engineers, this capability delivers several key advantages, including:

  • Density-controlled molded parts
  • Sharp edges and corners
  • Minimal flashing
  • Controlled finished-part tolerances
  • Molded geometries that retain graphite’s sealing advantages while improving part consistency and performance

We also produce composite graphite components using metal caps, metal mesh, and polymers when additional protection or enhanced performance is required.

Our molding capabilities support seals with inside diameters as small as 0.3 mm and outside diameters over 24 inches.

Typical applications include:

  • Sealing rings
  • Molded gaskets
  • Replacement parts
  • Custom fluid sealing components for demanding operating environments

Die & Die-Less Cutting

Die and die-less cutting are core fabrication methods used across nearly every product we manufacture, since materials often need to be cut both before and after processing.

We match the cutting method to your project stage, geometry, tolerance requirements, and production volume.

Die cutting is ideal for repeatable, high-volume production. Using steel rule, etched, and solid dies built to tight tolerances, we can support production runs of up to 100,000 pieces.

Die-less cutting is well suited for prototypes, short runs, and development work. It allows us to produce single gaskets and low-quantity parts without the upfront cost of tooling.

Our cutting capabilities include presses up to 65 tons, along with the ability to cut on the roll or in single pieces, perform kiss-cutting or full-through cutting, and process materials including metal.

This flexibility allows us to support everything from prototype development to high-volume production while maintaining the accuracy, repeatability, and turnaround your application requires.

Integrated Manufacturing for Application-Specific Solutions

When lamination, molding, and cutting are managed as integrated manufacturing capabilities, engineers can evaluate the material and fabrication strategy together rather than as disconnected process steps. That matters when the end goal is not just producing a part, but improving sealing performance, manufacturability, speed, and fit within the application.

Our broader process messaging already leans into this idea — combining engineering expertise, material science knowledge, custom solutions, and flexibility in production volume and turnaround.
